Description
A Darlington transistor is made up of two transistors in a single package. These are connected internally to have a much higher current gain than a standard transistor. To do this the two transistors share a common collector with the emitter of the first transistor is connected to the base of the second transistor. It can be thought of as using a switch to turn on a bigger switch.
In the ULN2803 there are 8 Darlington transistors with integrated suppression diodes and common emitters. Each Darlington transistor has a continuous load rating of 500mA and a maximum voltage of 50V. Each channel on the chip can be paralleled to increase current and each input is conveniently lined across from its output making wiring nice and simple. These are great for controlling clusters of solenoids, motors, high powered LEDs, or relays!
