PIR motion sensors are a type of sensor that passively monitors infrared light for changes. If these changes in the infrared light are significant enough, the sensor interprets this as motion. These sensors are commonly used as motion detectors in security lighting and alarms. The sensor has up to 14m range and roughly a 180-degree field of view.

Description

PIR motion sensors are a type of sensor that passively monitors infrared light for changes. If these changes in the infrared light are significant enough, the sensor interprets this as motion. These sensors are commonly used as motion detectors in security lighting and alarms.

This sensor works with 12VDC and has a field of view of approximately 180 degrees. There are three adjustable parameters to fine tune the sensor: Sensitivity, Trigger Time, and Light Level. These knobs are located on the bottom of the housing.

The sensitivity is used to adjust the amount of change required to consider motion. The higher the sensitivity, the longer the range (up to 14 meters) or the more sensitive the sensor is to close in objects moving. As the dial is turned clockwise, the sensitivity will increase.

The Trigger Time is the duration to hold the output signal high. The adjustment ranges from 15 seconds to 9 minutes. When the dial is turned all the way to the right, the sensor is set to 15 seconds. As the dial is turned clockwise, the hold time will increase.

The Light Level setting allows this sensor to take into account the ambient lighting. This allows for a “daylight” lockout where the sensor will not detect motion when ambient light levels are above the adjusted threshold. When the dial is all the way to the left, it will force the sensor to operate all the time, the further counter clockwise the dial is turned, the darker it will have to be before the sensor becomes active.

Wiring the sensor is quite easy:

  • Blue: GND
  • Brown: 12VDC (In)
  • Red: Output (12VDC when motion detected)

If you are looking to send this to a digital pin on a microcontroller, keep in mind that a voltage divider or logic level shifter will be required.

The housing mounts easily through a 16mm diameter hole and includes a rubber gasket. The sensor can pivot approx. 100 degrees on the center axis and has 180 degrees pitch adjustment. When mounted, ideally the adjustment dials should be facing in a downward direction as they are not protected against water ingress.
