A DIY weather station is a common project these days – but why stop at simple temperature, pressure, and humidity? This SI1145 UV Index / Visible Light / IR sensor by SiLabs opens up a bunch of additional sensing options. It doesn’t contain an actual UV sensing element, instead it approximates it based on visible & IR light from the sun. This form of sensing does provide an accurate UV index in addition to visible light and IR intensity as well.
The sensor itself is incredibly tiny – but Adafruit has placed it on a much more workable breakout board with breadboard pitch headers and additional circuitry to make it both 3.3 and 5V logic level compatible.
The SI1145 breakout is compatible with just about every microcontroller and single board computer out there as it connects over standard I2C using address 0x60. Adafruit provides a basic Arduino library that should have you up and running in no time!
