Description

Thermocouples are great for measuring the temperature in situations where a standard temperature probe would melt! While most standard temperature sensors will allow you to work up towards 125°C, the metal housing and stainless steel protected nickel-chromium wires allow this sensor to be used in temperatures up to 1200°C.

The probe itself is not enough to read the temperature; an amplifier will be required to read the incredibly small variation in voltage seen on a thermocouple. The Adafruit MAX31855 Breakout Board is a great choice for this sensor.

    Are these a one time use sensor at 2100 degrees Fahrenheit? Ive used other sensors that advertise that up to 1200C and their garbage to use more than once at that maximum temperature. What makes these any better is my concern! Can anyone address this?

      Hi Jessey,

      Good question! Just like any other component (or anything else in this world) running it at the absolute maximum ratings will shorten the lifespan considerably. Just like lifting a 2000lb object with a 2000lb rated chain, measuring up to 1200C with a 1200C maximum rated sensor is not going to fair well. You might get away with it a few times, but it will fail quickly. At 1200C you would probably want a Type R or Type S Thermocouple – hopefully that helps!
