Description

Build your own traction control system ā€“ or something a little simpler! This rotary encoder / wheel encoder is a type of sensor typically used to measure the rotation speed of a shaft or motor. These are ideal when building a wheeled or tracked robot ā€“ they can be used to determine distance traveled, correct differences in motor speeds, and when coupled with other sensors, if it is moving or stuck!

The encoder disk in this sensor kit is laser etched steel and features 100 slots. The sensor is powered with 5VDC and outputs 5/3.3v logic safe outputs. As the disc rotates through the sensor, the sensorā€™s infrared LED is visible to the phototransistor on the opposite side. There are two different output pins on the sensor: The yellow wire outputs a pulse high at the precise moment of the transition, while the blue wire outputs a signal high the entire duration the led is visible.

    I have a few of these. Any idea if the IR LED needs some resistors connected in line with it, or can it be connected directly to a battery?
